Participating parents with children aged 0-6 years old, as well as pre-parents and pre-moms who are expecting a baby and want to actively use technology such as gadgets, apps, and home appliances in their child-rearing.BabyTech Communityholds a monthly "Discover Parenting Hacks Project - Cross Review for Everyone".

This project aims to find "parenting hacks" for enjoying child-rearing, and community members will share their experiences with various baby tech services. Each time, members who have actually used one baby tech service will post a review of the service on a special website. Afterwards, they will share their impressions and usage of the service in an online roundtable discussion, which will be published as a review article on BabyTech.jp.

The second edition of the Cross Review for Everyone featured theNon-Paper TheaterThe story is told by two different devices connected by bluetooth. It is an application of an old-fashioned picture-story show, characterized by the fact that the reader and listener of the story use different devices connected via bluetooth. The app also features tricks that are possible only with an app, not paper, and unique works that can only be enjoyed with an app that uses two devices (for details, please refer to theintroductory articlefor more information). The application won the grand prize in the BabyTech® Award Japan 2021 Learning and Playing category.

Community members who have actually used this kaminashibai conducted reviews on various aspects of the service, including its enjoyment (numerical ratings were given on a 5-point scale from a minimum of 1 to a maximum of 5). In addition, Tetsuya Nagata, CEO of PapaSmile, Tetsu Saito, community manager, and Daisuke, a community member (titles below omitted), participated in an online roundtable discussion (hereinafter referred to as "cross review talk"). This article is a summary of those discussions.

Degree of parent-child enjoyment

reviewerReview scoreComment
big salmon5It was the first time I had the sensation of using two devices. The child also seems to be happy to have the device without being interrupted by the parent. Doing the same thing at the same time. This in itself was a gratifying time for me.
Sachi.5We needed two devices and both parents and children had important roles to play together.

Nagata:Thank you very much for your time today. I would like to start the cross review talk right away. The number of reviews is fewer than in the first session, but this is due to the fact that this application is only compatible with iOS, so Android users could not participate, among other reasons.

Now, first of all, the reviewers all gave a perfect score of 5 for the "degree of enjoyment for parents and children.

Saito:After all, everyone seems to enjoy "being able to move pictures by themselves.

Nagata:This application is not like a picture-story show where only the parents read and operate the story, but the children must also participate in various ways to make the story progress, which is probably the reason for the high evaluation of this application. In the case of "Momotaro," children feed Momotaro rice, and in the case of "Big Turnip," they pull the turnip. In other words, both the "reader" and the "listener" have roles to play, and each can enjoy the story.

Are there aspects of operability that need to be worked out in conjunction with "children using the device"?

operability

reviewerReview scoreComment
big salmon4
Sachi.4There were times when the screen stopped in the middle of the game. It would be nice if the screen could be immediately restored when it stopped, but if it cannot be restored, the excitement is interrupted there, so I thought it would be nice to have a warning at the beginning, such as "Please operate slowly.

Nagata:Regarding operability, one user commented that the screen stopped halfway through. This application uses two devices, and if you operate one device in a flash, the screen goes too far ahead in a flash, and you can't get back to it. ......

Saito:Parents can be conscious of operating the app at an appropriate speed, but it is difficult for small children to adjust the speed. It may be a good idea to give more room for operability on the application side.

Nagata:There are ways to convey the appropriate operating timing, such as displaying on the screen a message like "Now! on the screen, or some other method of communicating the appropriate timing of operations. I have created several interactive apps for children, and when I don't want them to hit the screen repeatedly, children don't wait for me to tell them to "Wait for me! children will not wait for the screen when they do not want to be hit repeatedly. So, if I show "Yoi ...... (Don!)", which is used before the start of a 100-meter race, the children will wait for the start of the race. which is used before the start of a 100-meter race, the children will wait.

Reviewers enthusiastically asked for more works and readings!

continuity

reviewerReview scoreComment
big salmon4If there are more stories and more choices/choice syllogisms, it would seem that there would be continuity. I thought that if the flow of selection is more like a child selecting a book and the parent reading it, rather than the parent selecting the book, it would be similar to the feeling of selecting a book from a bookshelf.
Sachi.3They want to do different stories, so I thought that if the number of stories increased regularly, or if there was a flavor to the same story that allowed them to make different choices each time they did it, they would want to do it over and over again.

Nagata:This one asked if the children would be willing to continue to do this application. A common theme among the comments is that they would like to see an increase in the number of stories. However, this is a difficult task because the app developer handles the production and operation of both the content and the system all by himself, and he has perfected each of his works to a very high level.

However, I had the impression that the overall score for this review was high and many of the comments were lengthy. We feel that everyone has high expectations, and we have received many different ideas. Perhaps it would be a good idea to develop the production of content in an open manner.

Saito:I don't think there is much experience in using two devices interactively. I think this is the reason why everyone sees so many possibilities. It naturally opens up a variety of ideas.

Nagata:Indeed! I was impressed when I first played on a competitive video game console, but I think it was refreshing for everyone to experience the interactive, real-time reactions in a picture book application.

Sophisticated design that everyone likes to say "Cute! Sophisticated design that everyone likes

design ability

reviewerReview scoreComment
big salmon4It was lovely.
Sachi.5The illustrations are lovely!

Nagata:Regarding the "design" of this application, "Cute!" The reviewers were unanimous in saying that the "design" of this application is "cute! The design is very pleasing to the eye.

The demand is for "educational content" and the introduction of "unlimited reading tickets".

lightness

reviewerReview scoreComment
big salmon4Although the focus is on picture books, personally, I would be very grateful if it could be a tool to enjoy other things together with picture books. For example, a learning tool like... how to count numbers or read a clock...
Sachi.4I gave it a "4" because I need tickets. I am happy to receive the first 10 tickets as a gift!

Nagata:This question asked whether parents would feel comfortable starting this application when asked to do so by their children. Some commented that they would be more proactive as parents if there were "learning tool-type" works, and others commented on the fact that charged tickets are required to use the content. However, considering the effort required to produce and operate this application, it would be difficult to open it up to the public for free. First of all, a realistic solution would be to introduce unlimited reading tickets.

Possibilities include "long-distance parent-child communication tool" and "children as readers."

Please let us know if there is anything you and your child have noticed through enjoying Minasabai.

reviewerComment
big salmonPersonally, I thought "Kanashibai" was wonderful in terms of the connection I could make with my children when I am at home. However, as someone who spends only a short amount of time at home, I would be very grateful if it could be used to connect with my children even when I am not at home. This time I used Bluetooth, but it would be even better if it could be connected by other means as well, so that I can connect with my children even when I am not near them.
Sachi. The third time we did it, my child wanted to play the "reading" role, and my second son, who is not yet very good at reading, was creating his own.

Nagata:First, there was a comment that it would be nice to be able to connect not only via Bluetooth, but also remotely via Wi-Fi, etc. This is Daisuke's comment.

Daisuke:Yes, I am. I make those comments because I am not at home much of the time. The kaminasaba has been very helpful in making sure I am home and spending meaningful time with my children. So, as a dad, I am happy if it can be a tool for me to connect with my children when I stay at home for work or when I am on a business trip.

Nagata:I can see situations where that would be used! Another commented, "My child wanted to play the role of a reader using the kaminashibai. It seems to be very stimulating for children to be on the reader's side of a story, in other words, to know what goes on behind the scenes. It would be a very good communication between parent and child, for example, when the child says, "Now daddy is going to kill the ogres.

Will the "two-device" feature create even more unique content?

What are your expectations for Kami-nashi-Bai in the future?

reviewerComment
big salmonI thought it would be a great read if there were more stories to be told in the future.
Sachi.I thought it would be interesting if there were more stories, or if there was a function that allowed parents and children to create their own original stories!

Nagata:As for what to expect from Kami-nashi-Bai in the future, the common feeling among reviewers seems to be, "I want more stories! This seems to be a common sentiment among reviewers. On the other hand, the high quality of the individual works seems to have made users want to "read more! I think this is because the quality of each piece is so high that users want to read more. I hope that investors will invest in the system and cooperate with publishers. Also, as Daisuke mentioned in his comment, "Learn about time" contents, for example, KAMINASHIBAI can put the device on Papa's stomach and say, "Let's look at the belly clock! Daddy, are you hungry? I think it would be possible to create unique contents such as "Daddy, are you hungry?

Saito:My children have told me since they were older that when they see these interactive apps, they want more gameplay. It's a contraption where you can score points by moving the characters.

Nagata:If the story changes randomly, it might keep the children interested. Another comment from a reviewer was that it might be interesting if the story diverges. If so, it would already be in the adventure game genre. ......

Saito:When I saw Daisuke's comment "...... for learning content," the idea of using kaminashi-bai as an illustrated book came to mind. For example, if a time-lapse video of the planting of flower seeds, their blooming and withering, and content that can be viewed while controlling the playback speed is incorporated, it would be possible for the reader to move forward and backward in the video while explaining the process. If this were to happen, it would no longer be a "picture-story show," but I think this application has a lot of room for growth as more and more ideas like that emerge.

Nagata:We, too, are excitedly awaiting the future development of Kaminashibai. Thank you very much for your time today. Lastly, I would like to announce that until mid-July 2022, you can experience "Kamina-Shibai" at the BabyTech Experience Corner permanently set up at the Akachan Honpo Seven Town Azusawa Store in Seven Town Azusawa, Itabashi Ward, Tokyo. It is a very attractive application, and we hope that many of you will try it for yourself.
