Mr. Tomohiro Inagaki
As a father and an engineer
I want to apply Kyocera's technological expertise to make tooth brushing a fun time for parents and children
Editor: What are the features of Possi?
Inagaki: To put it simply, Possi is a toothbrush that plays music only when you're brushing your teeth. Even children who don't want to brush their teeth will quietly open their mouths, making it easier for their parents to brush their teeth. As far as I know, there was no other product like this in the world at the time of development.
Editor: How does it work that you can hear music only when you are brushing your teeth?
Inagaki: When the brush hits the teeth, the piezoelectric ceramic element in the head of the toothbrush transmits vibration (sound) to the teeth. Piezoelectric ceramic elements are also used in Kyocera's mobile phones and smartphones.
Editor: It's a very lovely design, did you have any motif in mind? Could you tell us about the origin of the name Possi?
Inagaki: The toothbrush is designed to look like a character because of its shape like an animal's tail. We also paid attention to the pop and colorful colors so that children can relate to it. We named the product "Possi", a play on the word "tail". It's also a play on the word "Possible," which refers to children's potential.
Editor: What prompted you to develop it in the first place?
