A survey on children's awareness of aspiration was conducted among parents with preschool, kindergarten and school-aged children. About half of the parents were aware of the danger of aspiration of "beans" for Setsubun. The number of parents who answered that they actually felt the risk of aspiration amounted to "45.931 TP6T", and "candy" seemed to be the most common ingredient in such cases.

Let's take a look at the details of the survey from the press release.

Parents who have felt the risk of aspiration at home 45.93%
〜The most common result was that "candy" was the most dangerous foodstuff.

(headquartered in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Nobuaki Chiba, President & CEO; hereinafter "Sen"), a provider of childcare tech services that enrich the child-rearing environment for preschools, schools, and parents with the power of technology under the motto "Peace for Children," conducted a "Survey on Parental Awareness of Aspiration" targeting 135 parents of preschoolers and children attending preschool and school. (headquartered in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Nobuaki Chiba, President & CEO; hereinafter referred to as "Sen") conducted a "Parental Awareness Survey on Aspiration" among 135 parents of preschoolers and children attending preschool and school.

As a result of the survey, when asked if they knew of any foods that could pose a risk of aspiration, 88.891 TP6T respondents answered "beans and nuts (48.891 TP6T)," "rice cakes (34.811 TP6T)," and "candy (28.891 TP6T)," with 88.891 TP6T naming at least one of these foods. When asked if there was anything they did at home to prevent aspiration, the most common response was "giving food appropriate for the child's age (74.81%)," while only 5.19% responded "nothing in particular," indicating that the majority of respondents were careful about aspiration.
On the other hand, when asked if they have ever felt the danger of aspiration at home, "Yes (45.93%)" and "No
(54.071 TP6T)". When asked about the specific situation of those who responded that they were at risk of aspiration, they replied, "I was walking around the house eating candy and fell down and choked on it. I managed to swallow it, but I was worried that I might choke." A person who was walking with a piece of candy in her mouth, uttered a loud cry, and almost choked on it for a moment. He coughed it up and spit it out, so he was safe." I once licked a large piece of candy while lying down, and when I changed my position, it got stuck in my throat and I had to hit my back to get it out. The most frequent result was that the respondents felt danger from "candy".

summary

Recently, there has been a lot of news about aspiration among infants and toddlers, and people have been especially alerted to the danger of aspiration during bean-throwing ceremonies. When asked if they knew of any foods that could pose a risk of aspiration, nearly 90% of parents answered one or more ingredients, and only 5.191 respondents (TP6T) answered "nothing in particular" when asked if there were any precautions taken at home regarding aspiration. It can be said that many parents have some knowledge about the risk of aspiration and are taking measures to prevent it.
On the other hand, however, 45.931 TP6T said that they have felt the danger of aspiration at home. While many parents are aware of the dangers of aspiration and tend to take some precautions in their lives, nearly half of them have felt the danger of aspiration.
Although "candy" was the most frequently mentioned ingredient that was perceived as dangerous, only 28.891 TP6T were aware of it as an ingredient with aspiration risk, indicating that there may be a difference between the actual risk of aspiration and the level of awareness among parents. In addition, although the Consumer Affairs Agency warns that "hard beans, nuts, etc. should not be fed to children under 5 years of age," the number of parents who cited these foods as potentially dangerous did not reach half of the respondents. Considering the fact that parents tend to view Setsubun events positively and actively participate in them (*), it may be necessary to more widely and more correctly inform them of the danger of aspiration.
