(Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; Representative: Kei Hattori), the Japanese subsidiary of 51Talk Online Education Group (Head Office: Singapore; Representative: Jiajia Huang), the world's largest online English learning platform provider, will launch its online English education platform "Brilliant Kids(R)" in Japan in September 2023. (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; Representative: Kei Hattori), the Japanese subsidiary of 51Talk Japan Inc.
51 (FiveOne) Talk Online Education Group was founded in 2011. With the philosophy of "giving everyone the ability to speak with the world," the company is one of the world's largest global English education tech companies, offering 51Talk, a one-on-one online English learning platform with foreign teachers for children ages 3 to 15. In 2016, 51Talk became the first online English education company from Asia to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Some of its students have been invited to speak at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP).
In Japan, the service will be offered to children between the ages of 3 and 15. The lessons utilize Brilliant Kids(R)︎, an English learning program that stimulates the five senses based on the "Five-Senses Education Method" used in elementary schools in the United States. Through games and activities that stimulate the visual, auditory, tactile, and other senses, children can learn English naturally, and a wide variety of materials and activities promote the development of all five senses.
We focus on the child's ability to concentrate, so each lesson is 25 minutes long. We have developed our own online video platform, which allows students to learn while having fun, just like playing a game, making it easy for them to focus on the lesson. The content of the lessons conforms to international standards and can be used as preparation for certification exams such as the Eiken(R)︎.
In addition, as a measure unique to "51Talk" Japan, a dedicated Japanese coach will accompany the students. 51Talk Online Education Group believes that continuity is the key to learning English, We have therefore decided to offer regular sessions to check students' proficiency level and to provide parents with individual consultation and information using AI analysis.
In November 2023, EF Education First released the 2023 edition of the EF EPI English Proficiency Index Ranking. It classifies the world's 113 countries and regions into five groups according to their scores: "very high English proficiency," "high English proficiency," "standard English proficiency," "low English proficiency," and "very low English proficiency," with Japan ranking a low 87th in the "low English proficiency" category. In addition, although English education has been made compulsory for 3rd-6th graders in elementary school from FY2020 for the purpose of developing global human resources, there is a shortage of teachers who can provide practical English education in Japan. Under such circumstances, we have decided to launch the "51Talk" service in Japan, as the introduction of tablet terminals in educational settings is expanding in Japan and online education is becoming more widespread, creating an environment where students can learn from any location.
In the future, more effective English language learning will be necessary to catch up and improve this ranking in the global English language education market. In addition to the quality of the English lessons provided by foreign instructors, 51Talk also supports continuous learning, which is important for improving English proficiency, through the accompaniment of dedicated Japanese coaches for students and their parents. We hope to contribute to the improvement of English ability of children, who are the future of Japan.
Key features of Brilliant Kids(R)︎ provided by 51Talk
Japan-specific service] Accompanied by a Japanese coach using AI analysis
1. Support continuity and retention of learning by accompanying children through the "1+4" and "4+1" cycles.
A level check and trial lesson before the start of the course determines the course of study. For S level students, a warm-up session with a Japanese coach before the first lesson will help them feel confident and prepared for the next four lessons with a foreign instructor. For children in levels 0-9, after the four lessons with the foreign teacher, the Japanese coach will conduct a follow-up session using a special AI tool. This session will review the 4 lessons and provide guidance in Japanese on areas where the child does not fully understand to ensure that the learning is solidified.
2. Accompanying parents to provide concrete support for their concerns about their child's learning situation.
In addition to foreign instructors, Japanese coaches accompany parents. We provide individual consultation, coaching, and information on English education mainly through chat rooms to relieve parents' concerns about their children's learning. In addition, AI tools are used to visualize the child's learning trends, lesson pace, areas of weakness, and other information. Based on the data, we also support parents who are close to their children's learning.
Five-Senses" English language learning program at an elementary school in the U.S.
The program incorporates gamification elements such as vocabulary reinforcement, phrase repetition practice, output practice, quiz format, puzzle games, and learning the relationship between pronunciation and letters, so that students can enjoy learning various contents using all five senses. This allows students to learn naturally and encourages the development of all five senses.
Screen and UX structure for easy immersion in lessons through proprietary online video platform
The system environment is smooth, based on the 200,000 lessons per day experience, and implements various cutting-edge technologies such as voice recognition, image processing, AI algorithms for analyzing student response trends, automatic question submission, and instructor matching. In addition, the system screen and UX are easy to operate, making it easy for students to immerse themselves in the lessons.
Pre- and post-lesson preparation and proficiency tests further solidify the learning effect.
In addition to the "4+1" cycle learning curriculum, students will be given a pre-requisite program before and after each lesson via app or browser, and a proficiency test for each unit. Levels range from 0 to 6. A level test is administered each time the curriculum is completed. Upon successful completion of the test, students receive a level certificate issued by 51Talk.
Strict management system to ensure the quality of instructors who are native speakers and skilled in working with children
We have established a unique and strict certification and training system with a 3% pass rate for instructors, which has enabled us to operate a system of more than 20,000 professional foreign instructors who are skilled in working with children.
Industry-leading quality of teaching materials in accordance with international standards
A dedicated teaching material development team of over 20 people has developed completely original teaching materials that are compliant with international standards CEFR*1 and CCSS*2. In addition, the school has been approved by the Malaysian Ministry of Education for admission as an English language institute that meets its strict standards.
