Current Status of Accidents in Childcare Facilities and "Lukumi Noon Sleep Check

According to the "Summary of Accident Reports in Childcare and Education Facilities*1" published by the Administration for Children and Families, fatal accidents have occurred in childcare facilities, and the risk is particularly high during noontime sleep. Therefore, in order to prevent accidents that occur while infants are sleeping, daycare facilities are required to check the direction of their bodies and whether or not they are breathing every five minutes, and to fill out a handwritten form. The high tension of watching over a child's life and the need to handwrite in a darkened room place a high mental and physical burden on the childcare provider, so in 2018, the "Lukumi Noon Sleep Check" was created to provide support through technology. A sensor attached to the infant's chest detects body movements, and a dedicated app automatically records the body orientation on a checklist. From December 2023, a function will be added that automatically records body orientation using a dedicated app without using the sensor (applications for use will be accepted from November). (Applications for use will be accepted from November.) This will contribute to improving the quality of watch-over operations at more childcare facilities.
