Deliver! The thoughts of fathers! To prevent sad accidents on school buses, two active fathers have created a free application to prevent children from being left behind.

(Nagoya, Aichi, Japan, CEO: Tsuyoshi Nakagawa), whose main businesses are catalog and newspaper ad printing and system planning and development, and Noop (Toyama, Toyama, Japan, CEO: Kazuyuki Hayashi), a limited liability company whose main business is system and application development, have released "Mamoru," a free iPhone application for school bus management for groups operating kindergarten and other school bus services, (Toyama City, Toyama Prefecture, CEO Kazuyuki Hayashi), a leading system and application developer and Noop, LLC (Toyama City, Toyama Prefecture, President Kazuyuki Hayashi), released "Mamoru," a free iPhone application for bus operation management, on September 26.

■Two active fathers from Nagoya and Toyama created the application!

The developer, Nakagawa of Nagaya Printing is a father in Nagoya with two daughters, ages 4 and 6, and Hayashi of Noop is a father in Toyama with two sons, ages 9 and 11. When we saw the sad accident on the news of a child being left behind on a school bus, we wondered if there was anything we could do as fathers to save the life of the child. We immediately contacted him by phone, and 30 minutes after seeing the news, the decision was made to create a free app, with no regard for the specifications of the app or its profitability. This was the start of a project that the dads were passionate about.

There are four points that we focused on in creating this safety management system.

  1. Eliminate children being left behind on school buses!
  2. As long as you have an iPhone, you can install it immediately, free of charge.
  3. Increase safety through adult behavior management, including teachers and drivers.
  4. For busy teachers, the time required to operate the application for the operation should be as short as possible.

What can I do with the ■ app?

This app prevents children from being left behind on the bus by encouraging teachers and drivers to move to the back seat.

The idea is that in the process of an adult moving to the back seat, if the child is in the seat, they will naturally see them and prevent them from being left behind. To prove that the adult has moved to the back seat and checked on the child, the child is asked to take a photo from the back seat and upload it to the application.

There are only two operational methods

  1. Set the operating time for that route and press the depart button.
    (timer running)
  2. After driving is complete, move to the back seat to take and upload photos.

If, after the departure button is pressed, photos are not taken and uploaded within a set timer, all users in the group will be notified of the risk of being left behind, with an alert indicating which buses have not been checked.

■To prevent adults from cheating.

Busy teachers and drivers can be expected to neglect safety management operations. Therefore, in order to protect children's lives and prevent adults from cheating, we have developed the following application.

  • Uploading photos from the backseat does not allow the use of photo folders.
We have to take live camera shots.
→ Prevent cheating with photos taken in the past.
  • Activity history, photos stored for the past 3 days, and photos can be viewed by all users.
→ Prevent cheats from taking and uploading inappropriate photos.

■The goal was to manage the safety of school buses overseas, which I saw on a news program.

Some school buses in the U.S. and South Korea have a system in which a button is placed at the very back of the seat to prevent children from being left unattended. When the driver turns off the engine at the end of the ride, an alarm sounds inside the bus, and the alarm goes off when the driver reaches the very back of the bus and presses the button. This is a behavior management concept that prevents children from being left behind when they are seen in the car during the process of moving the driver to the very back of the car.
Couldn't this function be substituted by taking pictures from the back seat? Wouldn't this eliminate the need to install a dedicated machine or construction work, and save time and money? This was the idea behind the development of the application.

■Finally

It is very encouraging to learn that the government, manufacturers, and many others are working earnestly to prevent a recurrence of this sad accident. In the future, safer mechanisms and systems will be created and introduced. We hope that this application, created by two fathers, will help to make school bus operations safer and easier, even if only for a short period of time.
May many people use it and may children's lives be protected.
