Unicharm Conducts "Survey on Diverse Working Styles of Women" 72.1% "Silent Retirement*" due to the difficulty of balancing life events and careers

Unicharm Corporation (President and CEO: Takehisa Takahara) conducted a “Survey on Diverse Working Styles of Women” among women who are currently working or have worked in the past. The results revealed that 72.1% of women who resigned or changed jobs due to concerns about balancing life events (e.g., pregnancy, childbirth, and childcare) with career plans did not consult with their supervisors or human resources sufficiently, leading to "silent resignation*. The number of working women is increasing. In order to respond to this issue, "Sofy: Knowing is the Start. In response to these issues, we are providing opportunities for the entire organization to learn about life events related to pregnancy and childbirth through "Sofi: Knowing is Beginning, Everyone's Pregnancy Training". This training aims to realize a society where employees can continue to work with peace of mind by helping them balance life events and career plans.

Another issue is the lack of an adequate workplace environment: "I wanted to review my work style in the wake of my pregnancy, but there was no one I could talk to about it.
  • Root factors: "Because I did not know the concept and examples of career planning based on life events (42.0%)," "Because I did not know how to balance life events and career planning (41.4%)," and "Because I did not have a familiar role model who is balancing life events and career (34.3%)" and "because I did not have a role model close to me who was balancing life events and career (34.3%)" were the main reasons for leaving their jobs.
  • Average age of leaving employment: The average age at which a worker retired or considered leaving was 29.6 years old. This highlights the reality that this coincides with a critical period in career development.

When asked whether they were able to discuss their concerns about life events and career plans with their supervisors or human resources when they resigned or changed jobs, a total of 72.11 TP6T of the respondents answered that they did not discuss them at all (34.31 TP6T) or that they thought about discussing them but could not (37.81 TP6T).

The majority cited "felt it was difficult to tell my boss (50.3%)" as the reason for not discussing the issue. The next most common reasons given were "felt that talking to someone outside the company, such as a family member or friend, would be sufficient (37.0%)," "thought it would have a negative impact on my career (27.1%)," and "didn't know or didn't have anyone I could talk to (22.1%). We found that psychological barriers and the improvement of the consultation environment are issues.

The most common reason given for considering resigning or changing jobs was "Because I did not know the concept or examples of career planning based on life events (e.g., pregnancy, childbirth, childcare) (42.0%). This was followed by "Because I did not know how to balance life events (e.g., pregnancy, childbirth, childcare) and career planning (41.4%)" and "Because I did not have a role model close to me who was balancing life events and career (34.3%).

Many respondents also expressed a lack of a consultation service or lack of information, such as "I wanted to review my work style in the wake of my pregnancy, but there was no one I could talk to about it," which also revealed the issue of a lack of knowledge and understanding throughout the workplace and other organizations.

Those between the ages of 25 and 29 were the most likely to have retired or considered retirement at 37.51 TP6T, followed by those between the ages of 30 and 34 at 30.81 TP6T, indicating that this is a challenge faced at a critical time in one's career development.

Discussion of Survey Results

The survey revealed that 72.1% of women who resigned or changed jobs due to concerns about balancing life events and career plans did so without consulting their supervisors or human resources sufficiently, leading to “silent resignation. The most common reasons for this were lack of knowledge and understanding in the workplace, lack of a consultation environment, and lack of personal knowledge and role models. The average age of those who considered ”silent retirement“ was 29.6 years old, indicating that this is an issue faced at a critical time in one's career development. Furthermore, 71.51% of the women who had retired, changed jobs, or considered doing so said that they would have changed their decision if they had received training, highlighting the need to improve knowledge and promote understanding within the organization.

Since pregnancy and work are closely related topics, we encourage understanding from those around you and dialogue with your partner to support you in envisioning a better future.
  3. Learning that will lead to a review and update of internal systems
    In some cases, employees may consider changing jobs or work schedules because of medical treatment or hospital visits. This training course will provide an opportunity for management and managers to review and consider systems and benefits by gaining a proper knowledge of pregnancy and the current situation.
  4. Discussions were held from diverse perspectives
    Participants from diverse perspectives, regardless of gender, age, or position, exchange opinions. Sharing multiple perspectives will help create a culture where individual concerns are understood by the entire organization.
