(Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Yoshihiro Kitamura), conducts surveys on pregnancy, childbirth, and childcare. In this issue, we would like to provide an overview of the survey on "Pregnancy and Childcare-related Services Provided by Local Governments.
Results of Questionnaire on Municipal Services Related to Pregnancy and Child Care
Pregnancy and childcare services provided by local governments. Each municipality has its own unique services, and they are often talked about on social networking services. In this issue, we have researched the services that we have actually used and the services that we would be glad to have.
Q1: What local government services did you actually use during your pregnancy and postpartum period? (Required) (MA)
Q2: How did you get involved in using municipal services and events? (MA)
The No. 1 service actually used was "courses" at 351 TP6T, and the No. 2 service was "child-rearing salons/child care centers" at 301 TP6T. Although about one in three respondents used these services, some said they did not know about them in the first place or did not have the time to use them. Furthermore, since this survey was conducted for mothers with children under 2 years old, it is likely that the corona and subsequent infectious disease outbreaks may have had an impact on the results.
The next most common reasons for using the service were "leaflets" and "contact" from the local government. On the other hand, one in four respondents "searched the Internet on their own," indicating that they gather information in a variety of ways.
The most popular municipal services that would be nice to have were "childcare services," "places to socialize," "postpartum care," and "diaper assistance. Please refer to the details of the comments on page 2 and beyond.
Overall, comments such as "I am envious of such services in other municipalities" also stood out. The services that are unique to each municipality are likely to be a major factor in deciding where to live.
Moms' comments on municipal services
Services we were happy to use
course (e.g. of lectures)
- My husband's enthusiasm for childcare increased when he and his wife attended classes on bathing and baby food.
- It was good to know how to make baby food in concrete terms at the baby food class. It was a good change of pace for me to be able to talk with other mothers.
Childcare Salon/Children's Center
- Even moms want to chat with someone other than their babies! I would go and chat and refresh my mind.
- It is also a great way to play with toys you don't have at home.
Interviews and consultations
- Weighing in as a baby really helped.
- I was grateful that the same midwife came to my home the entire time so I could talk to her about anything and get support for breastfeeding.
Picture book readings and other events
- I enjoyed having English picture books read to me! I bought a recommended picture book on the way home.
- I felt comfortable not only reading to them, but also discussing childcare issues with them.
Municipal services that would be nice to have
postpartum care
- The city I live in also focuses on postpartum care, and especially with my third child, I was able to receive visiting and lodging services. When I had my first child, there was no such service and I did not know about the consultation service, so I wished I had consulted with them more when I had my first child. Even if a service exists, if you don't know about it, you can't use it, so I wanted the service to be widely known.
- I think it's strange that different municipalities don't have enough of them, even though they all have the same difficulties with childbirth. ......
under custody
- I'd like to see a more casual deposit service! I wish there was a café on the other side of the glass where I could have a relaxing cup of tea for just one hour.
- It is refreshing to have a place where children can be watched by childcare workers and staff while in the same space, and parents can spend two hours reading or having a coffee break.
Interaction with other mothers and babies
- There is a lot of anxiety in an unfamiliar area, so we would like to see an environment where people can feel free to ask for advice and talk with each other. It would be great if there were more places in the area where children and parents could get together, and if there were a wider range of hours, such as weekdays and holidays, so that fathers could be happy.
Diaper Assistance
- In the city where I used to live, I received a 20,000 yen diaper coupon every year until I turned 3 years old, which could be used at many stores and pharmacies in the city.
- A friend of mine lives in a city that provides diaper-only trash bags free of charge, which I thought was nice.
