Heart Rhythm," a free application for iPhone developed by Kensuke Igarashi, 31, a doctor who runs an internal medicine clinic in Ochanomizu, Tokyo and a native of Takasaki City, is proving popular for its ability to check irregular heartbeat. The application has been downloaded approximately 40,000 times so far and is helping to reduce the risk of cerebral infarction.

Heart Rhythm displays a graph of pulse rates on the screen when the index or middle finger is placed against the lens of the smartphone camera, allowing the user to check for the possibility of an irregular heartbeat. The detection accuracy is 70-80%, and although the diagnosis is made by a doctor, the accuracy is said to be "sufficient for monitoring one's own health condition.

Although it is not a highly accurate 100-point diagnostic result, I feel that if there were more applications that could provide a 70-point result in 5 minutes, it would expand the use of smartwatches as well as smartphones.
