Little Planet, a next-generation theme park where play turns into learning (https://litpla.com(headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Takashi Goto), which operates nationwide, released on April 5 the smartphone application "Emori Rhythm" (iOS and Android/free of charge), which combines facial expression recognition and rhythm play.
Players are required to make facial expressions to the camera in response to the four subjects, "Laugh," "Cry," "Be Angry," and "Be Surprised," which are performed in rhythm with the camera. The player's score increases when he or she can make the correct facial expressions at the right tempo. The speed at which the questions are presented increases gradually, so the key to a high score is how rhythmically you can change your facial expressions.
Machine learning technology is used to determine facial expressions, instantly recognizing even subtle changes in facial expressions such as a smiling face or a face that looks like it is about to cry, and determining whether or not the facial expression is in accordance with the theme.

■Concept is "Children's Program
Emo Rhythm" is based on the motif of a "children's TV show" so that even small children and those who are shy can enjoy playing with facial expressions in a relaxed manner. As if calling out to children from inside the TV, the rabbit character rhythmically asks them to "Smile! and the character's voice is voiced by a kindergarten teacher. The characters are voiced by "Little Planet" navigators (staff) with long experience as kindergarten teachers, who navigate the "Facial Expression Play" in a fun way.
<My thoughts on the development of Emori Rhythm
The idea for the "Facial Expression Play" came from one of our development staff members, who was taking a bath with her children at home and asked them to "smile" or "cry" in the mirror. Crying! The idea for "Facial Expression Play" was inspired by one of our development staff members, who was taking a bath with her children at home and saw them making facial expressions in the mirror.

Originally developed as part of the attractions at the next-generation "Little Planet" theme park, we decided to release it as an app in order to bring the fun of "expressions, rhythm, and fitness" to a wider audience.
