The results of the study, "Preparation of Preschoolers for 'How to Spend After-School Hours after Entering Elementary School' - Actual Conditions and Issues at Nursery Schools and at Home -" were presented at the 2nd Research Conference of the Japan Society of After-School Education held on May 25, 2025.

- Cooperation between daycare centers and elementary schools is implemented in about 80% of facilities, but only about 10% of facilities cooperate with school-age children.
- Parents are greatly concerned about their children's "ability to stay safe after school.
Survey Background
Entering elementary school is a major turning point for children, and in recent years nursery schools and other facilities have been strengthening their cooperation with elementary schools. However, there has been an awareness of the issue of insufficient preparation for "after-school" activities. In fact, many parents of elementary school children have expressed concern about how their children spend their time after school, so the Nursery School Teachers Bank, Inc! Sokendai conducted a survey to find out what preparations preschoolers, their parents, and daycare centers are making.
results (of a study)
Results of Questionnaire to Childcare Centers, etc.
It was found that while various efforts are being made in the older classes of nursery schools and other facilities to prepare them for entering elementary school, the main focus is on adapting to "school life" and "learning. In particular, basic learning such as hiragana and numbers, as well as visits and exchanges to familiarize children with the elementary school environment are actively incorporated.
However, we found that there are few opportunities for preschoolers to learn about "after-school at elementary school.

Specific examples of initiatives

In addition, while about 80% of facilities have implemented cooperation between daycare centers and elementary schools, only about 10% have implemented cooperation with school-age children. While there are cases where childcare facilities and school-age childcare services are operated within the same corporation, many childcare facilities find it difficult to establish information and cooperation with school-age childcare services.

Results of Questionnaire to Parents
The results of the survey of parents of elementary school students revealed that anxiety about after-school activities is particularly high among families where parents return home late due to dual income or other reasons. The results of the survey indicate that there is a great deal of concern about whether or not their children will be able to spend the day safely, and the same concerns about safety at school dismissal are also strong.
(1) Anxiety before and after entering elementary school (multiple answers)

Each family is required to practice staying safe after school by repeatedly practicing leaving school and devising explanations so that your child understands the dangers. Preparation is also required, such as arranging for childcare, purchasing cell phones and GPS, and practicing opening and closing locks. On the other hand, it is believed that there are families who feel uneasy about leaving their children alone at home, but have not prepared effective means and methods.
(2) Preparation before and after entering elementary school

(3) Anxiety in the first year of elementary school

From the survey, we learned that many parents are concerned about whether their children will be able to spend time safely after school and that there are many things they need to do to prepare for this in advance.
Comprehensive Discussion
For children who were always under the care of adults when they were preschoolers, "after-school" is an unknown world after they enter elementary school. Despite the fact that this is such a major environmental change, we found that children do not have many opportunities to learn about or become familiar with after-school activities in advance. Parents are also concerned about their children's "safety and security," and are currently making preparations through a trial-and-error process.
In order to ensure that children immediately after entering elementary school can spend their after-school hours comfortably and safely, it is considered necessary to take measures to increase opportunities for parents and children to learn about "after-school" while they are preschoolers. In addition, as one measure to increase cooperation between day-care centers and school-age children's day-care centers, initiatives such as personnel exchange between day-care centers and school-age children's day-care centers may also be effective.
