Aniehon" is a project to make short animations of Kodansha's picture books and show them on TV commercials and on the web.
The memorable first episode, "Luchka the Harinezumi" (Harinezumi no Ruchika)," released in May, was a hit with its adorable worldview that is exactly the same as the original story. In response to the warm reception, we are pleased to announce the broadcast and distribution of the second installment, "Laney-chan and the Happy Birthday"!
Based on the children's picture book "Runny-chan to tanbaby yasan", the first picture book for children by Taro Out, who is active worldwide as a character artist, working for Starbucks, Paul Smith, shiitake mushroom fortune-telling, and others. The gentle world of Tarout, whose dream for many years was to create picture books, will be recreated with colorful images.
The animation, which will be made in two versions, a short version and a long version, will be broadcast and distributed starting today, June 21 (Friday) at 12:00 noon. The 30-second short version will be aired in TV commercials nationwide, and the director's cut version, a one-minute long version, will be available on the web. The English subtitled version will also be available on the web, making it a work that can be enjoyed by people from overseas as well.
This animated feature will be directed by Sakuta Hasm, who has worked on the "Dayan the Cat" animated series and "Sumikko Gurashi: The Movie Sumikko Factory no Fushigi na Ko" (Sumikko Gurashi: The Mysterious Co. of the Tsugihagi Factory). Under the director's direction, animation production was handled by L'ESPRIT, which specializes in soft animation for characters with simple shapes, such as "Tanuki to Kitsune" and "Anime Kapibara-san. The goal was to create a finished product that looked as if the characters in the picture book had come to life. Please also take note of the rich tone of the music in the film, which was created using the film scoring method, whereby the music is composed to match the finished film.

When I read the picture book "Lanny and the birthday boy," the first thing that came to me along with the gentle story was the simple and cute character of Lanny-chan.
In making the video, I thought it would be great if I could delve into the fascination of Lanny, and I wondered, "How was he by himself until the birthday boy came to get him? How did she see the outside world after she was taken away from home? I put together an animation that incorporates my own interest in Lanny as an original element.
We hope that people who see the animation will fall in love with Lanny and pick up the picture book!

Lanny, a little bunny, has been all alone since he was born and does not know when his birthday is. Then, a mysterious stork named the birthday boy comes to Lanny and invites him to a birthday party. Lanny did not know his birthday, but he kept it a secret and went out with the stork. Lanny and the stork go out to the forest and gather today's birthday birthday boy and girl from all over the world! Then, Lanny went to ......? I want to celebrate the birth of all beings and affirm the individual and diverse values of "everyone" and "everyone who is out of everyone. I thought so when I saw the first animation in the process of production.
One of the most memorable moments was a meeting to discuss how to voice the narrator. I had a vague image of a voice like a mother who reads to her children, since the book is a picture book. However, some people suggested that since the work affirms the existence and diversity of each person, we should use a voice that is not restricted by gender or role.
This picture book was created to please not only "everyone" but also "everyone who feels left out". I feel that the director and staff deeply understood this when they created this book, even in the case of the voice episodes.
