Do you think programming education is necessary for your child's future?

Do you think programming education is necessary for your child's future? The most common response to this question was "Necessary (61.1%)", followed by "Neither (32.6%)" and "Not necessary (6.3%)". This was followed by "neither (32.6%)" and "not necessary (6.3%). The number of respondents who thought it was necessary was nearly 10 times that of those who thought it was not necessary.

What is your child currently doing related to the program? (Please indicate more than one.)

As for what their children are currently doing related to programming, the No. 1 response was "Nothing (60%)" and the No. 2 response was "Typing on the keyboard (20%). Less than half of the parents felt that programming education was necessary, but less than half of the children were actually doing something about it.

How did your child get started with the above and how is he/she doing?

No. 2: Typing on the keyboard

  • Typing is like learning in school (30s female).
  • The reason I started typing on the keyboard was because of a typing game on a tablet used at school. Since we live in an age where there are many opportunities to be exposed to typing, my children enjoy learning typing skills while playing the games. (30s female)
  • I enjoy typing at elementary school and I enjoy doing it at home. (30s female)
  • He is typing on a tablet. (Male, 40s)
  • There was a game typing and I started to get a high score in it. (40s female)
  • I bought a computer specifically for my child, so typing is motivated. (40s female)
  • I started practicing because I wanted to be able to type faster if I was using a computer for work (30s female).

Typing was once thought of as typing on a computer keyboard, but many children are learning it in school as a necessary skill for tablets as well.

3rd: Minecraft

  • I got interested in Minecraft from Hikakin's YouTube streaming and started on Nintendoswitch. I play whenever I have free time. (Male, 40s)
  • I like Micra, and a programming class was teaching using Micra materials, and my child wanted to try it. I thought it would be good for my child to learn English and the alphabet at the same time. He seems to be enjoying the class every week, and although it seems to get more difficult as the level goes up, he feels a sense of accomplishment. My child even says she doesn't want to quit. (30s female)
  • I saw them playing Minecraft at a friend's house and became interested in it, so I am taking it in. (50s male)
  • It all started when my child wanted to play Minecraft after watching a Minecraft video on Youtube. (30s female)
  • My child wanted to learn, and he enjoys it very much, as it helps him to think and be creative. (Male, 40s)
  • When I saw my kindergarten friends playing Minecraft, I started saying I wanted to play too. (30s female)
  • I bought it because my child requested Minecraft. I decided to purchase Minecraft because some schools are introducing Minecraft in school education. I don't understand how it is related to programming, but my child is learning the names of minerals, how they are made, and how to use them through Minecraft, and I feel that it is very useful for her. (40s female)

Minecraft" seems to be the best programming material for children, as they can learn programming like a game.

No. 4: Programming classes

  • The reason for that class is that learning the basics of programming from childhood will open up future prospects. (50s~Male)
  • Because my child was interested (20s female)
  • I was told by a friend that I should do it. (50s~Male)

Some people started sending their children to the school because they were interested in it and because it was recommended by an acquaintance. We feel comfortable with programming classes that carefully teach the basics of programming.

No. 5: Scratch

  • Went to a programming class operated by a local government on consignment (50s male).
  • Because it is easy to understand.

Scratch" is a tool that allows users to write programming text without actually writing code. It seems to be a good tool that even small children can easily start using.

No. 6: Robot teaching materials

  • I became interested in a nearby robotics class and have been attending since first grade. I am in the 6th grade this year, and I can see that my ability to read instructions, assemble, and program (on a regular basis) is improving. (40s female)
  • Because it was recommended by a friend (30s female)

No. 7: LEGO Boost

  • The work is very fast, as if it is assembled in my head. (Male, 40s)
  • I bought it for my son who loves LEGO bricks and said he wanted LEGO Boost himself. (30s female)

Other

  • They want to make games and are having fun with a free game making application called springin. She seems to be using the game mechanisms created and published by others as a reference and incorporating them into her own games. (30s female)
  • I use a computer provided by my school to program fruits and animals that I drew myself to move automatically on the screen. (40s male)
  • Programming was a part of the Children's Challenge materials, and I naturally continued to enjoy it. (40s female)

What do you think about learning programming?

When asked what they thought about learning programming, the top response was "I would like him to learn if he wants to (48.91 TP7T)" and the second was "I have not given him programming lessons but I am interested in giving him programming lessons (14.21 TP7T). The majority of respondents were positive about having their children learn programming.

Summary of Survey Results

Where 190 men and women were surveyed about "programming",
When asked if they think programming education is necessary for their children's future, the most common answer was "necessary. Many respondents thought it was necessary, perhaps because programming has been made compulsory in elementary schools since the 2020 school year.

As for what their children are currently doing related to the program, "nothing" was ranked first. It seems that few people are still having their children do anything.

The most common response to the question on how parents feel about their children learning programming was "I want my child to learn if he/she wants to. It seems that many parents do not want to force their children to learn programming, but want them to learn if they are interested.
