Outpatient Clinic for Baby's Head Shape" opened at Keio University Hospital; orthodontic treatment using helmets made by Japan Medical Company, winner of the BTA2023 Award of Excellence (helmet treatment)

Keio University Hospital has opened an "Outpatient Clinic for Baby's Head Shape" in the Pediatric Craniofacial Center, where patients can receive craniofacial correction treatment using Kurum Fit, a helmet developed and manufactured by Japan Medical Company, Inc. (Chuo-ku, Tokyo, CEO: Hideaki Ohno, hereinafter referred to as "the Company"), a helmet that corrects the shape of the baby's head.

 Amidst growing social interest in the treatment of babies' head shape (distortion), the "Outpatient Clinic for Baby's Head Shape" was established in the Pediatric Craniofacial Center of Keio University Hospital.

  At the "Baby's Head Shape Outpatient Clinic" at Keio University Hospital, it is possible to receive appropriate differential diagnosis (cranial checkup) and treatment according to the situation, whether the infant's cranial deformity is caused by a disease or positional deformity (mainly caused by the direction of the head while sleeping). In addition, our professional staff will participate in the examination and provide services that are close to the baby and the family, together with the doctor.

Comments from Dr. Sakamoto and Dr. Miwa on the opening of the Baby's Head Shape Outpatient Clinic

 Since 1981, we have been treating patients born with deformities of the head and face, including premature fusion of the skull sutures.

 Since 2013, we have renewed our organization and established the Pediatric Craniofacial (Craniocraniofacial) Center, which focuses on pediatrics, neurosurgery, and plastic surgery, and has treated over 200 cases of premature skull suture fusion in the last 10 years. As a result, we see many people in our regular practice who are concerned about the shape of their baby's head. Many of them have positional plagiocephaly, which is not pathological but caused by sleeping habit.

 Although the use of helmets for the treatment of positional plagiocephaly has been widely publicized in newspapers and other mass media, as well as on social networking services, our center has had a policy of not providing treatment at our own expense. However, we have experienced several patients who were diagnosed with positional plagiocephaly and were followed up with helmet treatment, even though they had premature fusion of the cranial sutures.

 Based on these experiences and the numerous family members who requested helmet therapy at a facility that specializes in cranial issues, we decided that positional plagiocephaly should also be treated at a facility that can diagnose and treat pathological premature fusion of skull sutures, and we have decided to begin treatment at our center.

 At our center, physicians familiar with premature cranial suture fusion will make the appropriate diagnosis, and depending on the results, treatment will be provided in the same facility. Helmet therapy is also provided in collaboration with pediatrics, neurosurgery, and plastic surgery. In addition, consultation is available in the hospital if a condition requiring treatment is found.

About baby's head distortion

 The main cause of distortion of the baby's head is external pressure such as orientation, but rarely there is pathological deformity, and it is the positional cranial deformity caused by external pressure that is the subject of helmet therapy. It is now possible to treat cranial deformity by wearing a therapeutic helmet between the ages of 3 and 6 months, when the baby's head circumference is growing rapidly.

 Measurement of the shape of a baby's head can be done not only with a dedicated 3D scanner, but also with the "Baby Head Shape Measurement App".

 The "Baby Head Shape Measuring App" developed by our company allows users to easily measure the shape of their baby's head by simply taking a picture. The application has been downloaded more than 200,000 times (*Note) and its accuracy has been improved, and its data has been used in publications by physicians. The app is designed under the supervision of doctors and can also be useful during medical examinations at hospitals.
