The "Childcare Quiz Papa Power Test," which supports fathers in raising their children by providing useful knowledge in the form of fun quizzes, conducted a survey on attitudes toward childcare leave before the implementation of divided postnatal and childcare leave for fathers from October 2022.

Mama's Sachi LLC (headquartered in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Yukie Takahashi, President) offers the "Papa Power Test: One Question a Day Childcare Quiz on LINE," a questionnaire survey asking about experiences, thoughts and realizations, and reasons for taking childcare leave, by the status of the leave, and 264 people (males: 264 respondents (male: 178, female: 82, non-response: 1) responded to the survey.

The "Papa Power Test: 1 Question a Day on LINE" (hereafter "Papa Power Test: 1 Question a Day on LINE") is an information service that offers a daily child-rearing quiz on LINE supervised by an expert (development of babies from 0 to 1.5 years old, how to take care of them, accident prevention and lifesaving methods, first aid at home, etc.). The service offers approximately 250 quizzes mainly for fathers who are raising a child for the first time.

■Experienced/taking maternity leave

Respondents who had experienced maternity leave were asked if they were happy to have taken maternity leave,Many comments were received, with 96 % of men and 91% of women responding "good".

  • Happy to spend time with family (Male in his 30s)
  • I could talk a lot with my wife about our children and family (Male in his 40s)
  • Allows me to have time to face my children (Male in his 20s)
  • I was able to experience a day in the life of a mother and her child. It was a precious time for me to see things that I don't get to see every day I'm away from home. It has also become a memorable experience for me and my wife. (Male in his 30s)
  • I thought it would be very difficult to deal with children who don't sleep while working (30s female)
  • I was able to learn a lot about my child (baby) and see her growth day by day. The maternity leave period also gave me time to recover my strength and adjust my life rhythm, and I was able to firmly think, "I want to go back to work and work! (Female in her 40s)

On the other hand, those who chose "rather good," "neither good nor bad," and "not good/not good" commented on the system's lack of usability, the difficulty in balancing finances and careers, and the increase in marital strife.

Q. "Please tell us about the benefits of taking maternity leave that are similar to those you are thinking about (multiple answers)."

As for the benefits of taking maternity leave,More men and women chose "I can watch my children grow up nearby.The second most common answer for men was "I can help my spouse and share both joys and pains. This is followed by "couples can help each other and share both joys and pains" in second place for men, and "communication between spouses becomes smoother" in third place.
For women, the second most common response was "I feel happy every day," and the third most common response was "It gives me an opportunity to review my work style.

Q. "Please tell us about anything you noticed while on maternity leave (multiple answers)."

When asked, "What have you noticed since taking maternity leave?" In response to the question,No. 1 for both men and women was "It is hard to take care of and be involved with a baby by myself," and No. 2 was "A day goes by very quickly when I am taking care of a baby.The third most common response from men was "There are many things I don't know and can't do when raising a child for the first time, but that goes for my partner as well. Men ranked third, followed by "There are many things you don't know and can't do when raising a child for the first time, but this is true for your partner as well.
The top three male responses are,It is apparent that men taking maternity leave helps them see eye to eye with their partners.

■Considering/planning to take maternity leave

Twenty-four men and one woman responded that they were "considering taking maternity leave."
Ten men and five women responded that they were planning to take (or had already decided to take) maternity leave.

About half of the respondents who are considering acquiring the certification say that they hope to do so, but that it seems difficult to actually do so.The company is doing so.
The most common reason for this was "because of the nature of the work or type of work that makes it difficult to take a long leave of absence," followed by "because of financial concerns.

What are the most important factors to consider?"The most common responses to the question, "How long and when will you take the training?" were followed by financial considerations and understanding at the workplace.

Why I wanted to get it."Regarding,Among men, "Because I think childcare should be a cooperative effort between husband and wife" ranked first.The next most common answer was "because I want to watch my child grow up. The next most common answers were "Because I want to watch my child grow up by my side" and "Because I think mothers and children need support.

■"Never taken maternity leave/no plans to do so in the future"

Those who responded "have never/never plan to take maternity leave" were 46 males, 11 females, and 1 non-response by gender.

When asked "What are your reasons for not taking maternity leave?" the top answer given by men was "There is no environment or culture in my workplace that allows me to take maternity leave," followed by "I have financial concerns. The third reason was "I don't feel the need for maternity leave because I can adjust my work.

From October 2022, "Postpartum Papa Leave" (childcare leave at birth) and "Split Childcare Leave" will come into effect. However,At the time the survey for the "Childcare Quiz Papa Power Test" was conducted (August 2022), several respondents said that they learned of the October revision for the first time through the survey, or that they were not familiar with the contents of the revision.
